Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by mycobacteria, mainly Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Other mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis are Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium africanum, Mycobacterium and Mycobacterium canetti microtia, although these species does not usually infect healthy adults.

75% of cases of TB are pulmonary. Pulmonary tuberculosis is characterized by:
chest pain
cough with blood
prolonged cough for more than three weeks
fever
chills
night sweats
loss of appetite
weight loss
paleness

In 25% of active cases, the infection moves from the lungs and cause other types of tuberculosis characteristic immunosuppression in individuals and in children. The infection can affect extrapolmonari:
pleura
central nervous system (meningitis)
lymphatic system (scrofola neck)
genitourinary system (urogenital tuberculosis)
bones and joints (Pott's disease).

Although Extrapulmonary TB is not contagious, can be present along with the lung which, however, is contagious. The infection, which can only occur from people with active tuberculosis and latent, and through coughing, sneezing, kissing, talking, and / or through the spitting.

About 90% of individuals infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis develop asymptomatic infection and latent tuberculosis that only 10% of cases the disease progresses in real (active tuberculosis). However, in cases where active tuberculosis is not treated, the mortality rate is 50%.

It can be quite difficult to diagnose the disease. Currently, latent infection is diagnosed in individuals not immunized by the tuberculin test.

The progression from tuberculosis infection to the disease itself occurs when the TB bacilli overwhelm the defenses of the immune system and begin to multiply. In 1-5% of cases the disease develops soon after infection, but in most cases a latent infection can occur without obvious symptoms.

Some disorders may increase the risk of being infected with tuberculosis, such as:
HIV infection
injections of drugs
X-ray of the chest
diabetes mellitus
silicosis
prolonged therapy with corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive
cervical cancer and head
hematologic diseases or endothelial lattice-like leukemia and Hodgkin's disease
kidney disease at the last stage
intestinal bypass or gastrectomy
chronic malabsorption syndromes
low body weight.

The traditional treatment uses antibiotics to kill bacteria or vaccine to prevent infection.
